At The Ellington Grace Foundation, our mission is to provide hope, support, and critical resources to families during their most difficult time. We are dedicated to improving the well-being of premature and critically ill newborns, their families, and the healthcare heroes who care for them.
In the year 2018, Latasha Davidson found herself expecting twins, a boy and a girl. However, her pregnancy took a turn for the worse as complications arose early on. To ensure the safety of her unborn children, Latasha was placed on bed rest, hoping to prolong the pregnancy as much as possible. Unfortunately, at 30 weeks, her placenta began to separate, leading to a frantic rush into the operating room for an emergency cesarean section.
As the twins were born, a deafening silence filled the room. Latasha caught a fleeting glimpse of her precious babies before they were swiftly whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Hours dragged on, filled with unbearable anguish, until finally, Latasha and her husband Tommy were granted permission to see their little ones. It was then that they received the devastating news that Ellington, their daughter, had little time left due to underdeveloped lungs. Despite the heartbreak, the family cherished every moment they had with Ellington, cradling her, baptizing her, and capturing countless photographs. In her father's arms, Ellington peacefully passed away.
The pain of losing a child is beyond words, yet Latasha and Tommy couldn't dwell in grief for long. Their son, Cain, fought for his life in the adjacent room, week after week, gradually making progress. Finally, after six arduous weeks, Cain was deemed healthy enough to leave the NICU. The joy of bringing their resilient baby boy home was an occasion filled with pure elation. Stepping out of the NICU doors, Latasha felt a newfound determination to transform her pain into purpose.
However, with a newborn and two older children to care for, Latasha struggled to conceive the perfect project. Yet, fate intervened shortly after Cain's homecoming, blessing Latasha and Tommy with another baby girl. Remarkably, she was born in the same hospital on the very day Ellington had passed, exactly one year later. As Latasha reveled in the beauty of her newborn daughter, the concept of the Ellington Grace Foundation was born.
Motivated by the desire to transform the heart-wrenching experience of losing a child into a day of service, Latasha established the Ellington Grace Foundation. Each year, on October 29th, the foundation visits Corewell (formerly Beaumont) Royal Oak Hospital, generously donating brand-new baby items to mothers in the NICU. With meticulous care, the foundation supports families during Thanksgiving and Christmas, ensuring they receive essential assistance.
Last year, their Ellie's Day contribution marked the largest physical donation ever received by the NICU. In 2020, the Board of Directors approved the formation of an on-call concierge team. This team consists of trained individuals passionate about supporting families. They respond to the homes or hospital bedsides of actively dying or deceased infants, providing invaluable support during the family's darkest hours. They offer referrals for pastoral care, assist in arranging life-saving organ donations, guide families through autopsy reviews, and help coordinate funeral arrangements.
Latasha's ultimate vision is to ensure that every mother in need receives essential resources and support, allowing them to focus solely on healing and moving forward. The Ellington Grace Foundation has already assisted over 400 families, providing food, baby items, resources, and unwavering support. Though Ellington Grace's time on this earth was brief, her legacy lives on through the foundation and the countless families they touch.
